Already active, but Tiller Community Solutions prompting me to start a free trial

I have been a Tiller user for some time and part of the Beta testers. After the most recent update, when I access the Tiller Community Solutions bar, it says that I am enjoying a 30 day trial. Hmph… Tiller seems to be a bit confused.

Honestly there are many examples of them making silly mistakes. Not sure why.

Is it possible you weren’t authenticated, @bwentwor?

@randy Actually, yes. I am able to use Tiller Money Feeds. However, when I load the Tiller Community Solutions sidebar, I see the trial statement.

I peeked at the code. There is an attempt to see if the spreadsheet is linked to the Tiller Money Feeds service by querying some metadata stored in this spreadsheet. In this case, it sounds like that test is returning the wrong answer.

To be honest, we haven’t invested much development effort in the TCS add-on in the last year and are hoping to move the best parts to TMF… so fixing this bug is not a high priority at this time.

@randy I understand. However, this issue is something that started in the last few days. The only change I made was to create a new template sheet. I am guessing that it is a system error and there isn’t anything marking my account as a Trial user then? If I need to use TCS, then I should use the option to skip the free trial and that won’t impact me?

The timing is interesting because we made the first change to TCS in a long time a few days ago… but it shouldn’t have affected the code that checks for subscriptions at all. It was a very localized change.

I don’t quite understand since I am not seeing the message, so it must be related to your spreadsheet somehow.

You can definitely press Skip but it might come up again the next time you reload. It is more of a nuisance than anything consequential about your spreadsheet or subscription.

Do you mind if I ask what you use TCS for?

@randy this issue is probably with how the metadata is being stored that Tiller Money Feeds is adding now as a result of last cycle changes to how the fill works. This wasn’t caused by recent TCS changes. It’s been occurring for folks on and off for a few weeks now.

That’s correct, just click “Skip” and you’re all set, this doesn’t really mean you’re in a trial.

We have too much code

TCS provides a really great categorized list of community templates. It’s the categorization that I really like. Also, if I need to reinstall a community generated template, I must do it from TCS until all of them are migrated over to the main UI. In addition, TCS has some functionality that the main UI doesn’t, such as the Utilities.

Can you share more here? What is it about the categorization that you like? We sort of punted on any type of filtering in Tiller Money Feeds right now because I didn’t like the dropdown list approach TCS uses and I think there were too many niche options. But it’s something I hope we can come back to. We thought about having it organized around core “jobs” like budgeting, savings, debt, net worth, etc but found there weren’t enough options just yet to make those make sense.

I really enjoy trying new templates and finding that I never knew that I needed something until just then. Most of the time, the titles of the templates concisely explain what the template will do so I don’t know if it needs to be categorized, but just an alphabetical list might work. If the list could point out new templates, that would be helpful. Perhaps you could have the name followed by the last update date next to it. I really like the direction that you all are going with templates in the main Tiller sidebar. One thing that has always confused me is the criteria for “Featured.” Personally, it is not an option that I would use as a filter. But, here’s the categories that I would use:

  • Tiller
  • Community
  • Updated
  • Award Winner (Ones which resulted in a cash price)

You might even have a category for templates provided by long-time subscribers to Tiller.

I am always happy to contribute ideas or give my opinions on possible changes. While Tiller isn’t perfect, I want to continue to see it succeed!
