Any former Personal Capital users? Curious about your migration

I’m contemplating a move from Personal Capital and am interested in experiences from those who have preceded me. I’m especially interested in how importing historical transactions from Personal Capital went? I’m curious how easy that process may have been- assuming it would be a .csv file? Does Tiller recognize the categories from Personal Capital or is this something one creates within Tiller? Was much work required post-import to get everything to your liking and “up and running”? Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Tiller @HH22.

I am a Personal Capital (now Empower Personal Dashboard) client with my investments. I’ve continued using EPD for investment tracking. However, I did bring my income and expense transactional history into Tiller. I do all my budgeting here.

For my historical income and expense transactions I exported them from the monthly budget function. I found this to be the easiest way as it already has a view of only the income and expenses. You will need to setup your Tiller Categories to match your EPD categories assuming you want them to be the same.

I found it easier to rearrange the columns in the exported file to match the Tiller transaction table column order and then simple copy and paste values. However, you could also use the .csv import tool. You can also copy and paste a unique set of your categories into the Tiller category table to get you started on setting up your budget estimates.

Keep in mind when you first connect your accounts up in Tiller it will bring in past transactions the first time it connects. You may need to do some work to remove any duplicates in your EPD export.

If you are also wanting to bring over investment data, that is possible to do. However, it is a more involved process. I don’t have experience with doing this. If you search the forums you will find some excellent information on how to setup Tiller to track investments in general, not EPD specific. The “how to” details and data setup will still apply.

Thank you for the reply and thoughts. I’ve completed the initial transaction import via the Tiller connection and approximately the last three months were imported from the various financial institutions. When I have an opportunity, I may look to supplement an additional nine months of expense and income transactions from Personal Capital using either the monthly budget function you’ve mentioned or selecting a date range for export to a .csv file, and import using the tool you’ve referenced or just paste values into the sheet after editing for category and other necessary congruency.
