Changing default email in Profile : Preferences : Account

In Profile : Preferences : Account; there is a setting to add an alternate email and set one of the emails to Primary. What is the purpose and impact of changing the default email? For example: Is the purpose to change ones billing account? Is it tied to the email used for the template? Or is the purpose to be able to have a different email for Profile notifications and functionality like Hello Money? What would get impacted if the default email is changed?

Also, I’ve searched to find where the Profile functionality is documented. Can you point me to where I might find it? Most of the settings are straight forward. But some, like the alternate email would benefit from some help text.
