How should I set up in my budget for work expenses/reimbursements

:Hi! We have a category in our budget for work expenses. When my husband travels, he spends some of his personall money and then his work reimburses him. I originally had it set up as an expense and was tracking it in my savings budget, but that doesn’t seem to be working correctly. It should end up that the balance of that category will be 0 after his work reimburses us. Should I set this up as an expense or a transfer? Should I track it in the savings budget?
Thanks,
Kim

I dont use the savings budget so cant quite speak to that, however i use a category “reimbursable” and then use tags to associate the transactions with each trip. I believe my use should correspond somewhat to that template as well as just the monthly budget which i use.

Then using the tags report, when the tag for each trip =0 then that trip has been reimbursed and when the category “reimbursable” =0 all transactions have been reimbursed.

Also i have “reimbursable” as an expense so that it shows up on the monthly budget as opposed to transfer.

I use the Savings Budget and follow a similar process as @bentyre1. I have two categories “Reimbursable” and “Reimbursement.” I use tags to reconcile the two. They are both transfer categories as I don’t see either of these as expenses that ought to factor into my personal budget.

I don’t quite understand. Do you have 2 categories or just one for the work expenses and reimbursements? I’m not sure what you mean by “tags”.
Thanks.

What do you mean by “tags”.?
Thanks

Tags are an additional way of organizing transactions. I use tags for lots of different things in my system. The basic idea is that you can use them to tag transactions that are either (a) across different categories but share something in common or (b) to distinguish between transactions in the same category. So, in this case, if I have a work trip to Chicago that includes a flight, a rental car, and a hotel, then I would create a “Chicago-February 2025” tag, and I’d tag the flight, rental car, and hotel transactions all with that tag. Then, I can search on that tag and get all of the transactions associated with that trip. Guidance on how to use tags in Tiller is here.
