is there a way to structure rules in an format similar to “autocat” for the purpose of automatically updating a subcategory column?
for example, if i see “Gas” in the description i populate the sub category as “utilities”

In my experience, categories are rather one dimensional. For subcategories, I use multiple categories with the distinctions separated by colons. Like, ‘Auto:Gas, Utilities:Gas, Interest:Savings, Interest:Investments’, etc.
If there’s a better way to do this, please let us know.

Have you tried Tags? AutoCat can apply a tag to your transactions.
Our categories structure is built so you don’t necessarily need subcategories if you utilize the Group too.
