Can't figure it out

I hope this doesn’t come off as a rant, but I am a little frustrated at this point. I really want to be able to do this in excel with Tiller, but I just can’t reconcile everything. So, I’m coming from YNAB (you need a budget) and I use 3 different credit cards (for different reasons) that I pay off every month. The idea is I buy everything on them and then apply those transactions to “envelopes” or, in this case, a budget amount. However, even though I set up all my budget amounts in Categories tab to match exactly what YNAB is showing, after I do that the Budget tab shows that I allocated more than the income for the month. My guess is that there is monies from “last month” that are “left over” to be applied to the income of this month, but I can’t figure out how to calculate what that is? I find it odd that, unlike all other budget programs I’ve used, Tiller doesn’t require you to put in a “starting balance”. I think if I had that, it might help me to make sense of all this. Anyway, I know I’m not giving you any info to go on here and that It’s overly complicated with the cards, but if you had this same issue and figured it out, or at least understand what I’m trying to explain, please let me know. Otherwise, I’ll keep plugging away at it until I (hopefully) figure it out. Thanks

I too came from YNAB to TIller and found that the Tiller templates were doing a different kind of budgeting than I was used to!
RichL (a regular Tiller Community contributor) wrote a Tiller enabled Google sheet that emulates a YNAB budget pretty well (without any of YNAB’S restrictions). Version 22.2 he was offering it free to Tiller customers, but I that was a couple of years ago. I think now it has a one time cost of $10 USD - Totally worth it. He also has an earlier version (2.0) you can find at no cost somewhere in the forums. I’ve used it for a long time. (I did modify it to exactly suit my budgeting needs, but the core function I never changed)

Sorry that you’re having some frustrations adapting to Tiller. Have you considered using the Savings Budget template? I’ve never used YNAB, but as I understand envelope budgeting, the Savings Budget sheet is pretty close. The best introduction to it is this YouTube video. There are a fair number of us who using the Savings Budget as our primary budget sheet. Happy to answer any questions that I can.

Hi MJ,

Welcome to Tiller!

Here are a couple of follow-ups to the replies from @jemmoa7 and @dmetiller.

In addition to the link to the Savings Budget the @dmetiller provided, there is also another community solution available for Google Sheets.
